The Freedom’s Journal operated from 1827-1829 was the first African American owned and operated newspaper in the United States. The weekly column was printed on Fridays. The Journal was founded by free born African Americans John Russwurm and Samuel Cornish on March 15, 1827. Reuben Ruby is named as an authorized agent in Portland, Maine for the paper in this 1828 advertisement.
